Two years after Iron Man 2 was released comes Iron Man 3. The actual film isn’t due until April of next year but the official trailer was released today. If the trailer is anything to go by, the film is going to be great. However, I may be biased as Robert Downey Jr is my favourite actor so even if the film is rubbish I will probably still like it. I wasn’t impressed with Iron Man 2 as it lacked the ensemble of the first and focused too much on the villain. It also became cheesy at times with the dancers on the stage and the fast, messy dialogue. I hope this one brings back the success of the first.
There is a lot of excitement building after the success of the Avengers which became the highest grossing movie of all time which stars Iron Man himself. Iron Man 3 is set to take off Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) story where Avengers left off. The trailer is shocking and sets the scene for a much darker more serious film than the first two, providing the audience with shots of Tony’s mansion in Malibu being destroyed containing all his suits and life’s work but most importantly him and Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) who are thrown backwards by the force of the rubble. There is no indication as to what has happened to them except brief shots of Tony in hospital with an oxygen mask and Pepper in metal constraints in obvious pain. There is someone out there who wants them both dead and it is likely to be the villain ” The Mandarin” to blame. Also, in addition to The Mandarin, there is another unknown figure in an Iron Man suit and it’s not Tony Stark.
The figure abducts Pepper from her bed where she is sleeping next to Tony who seems to be still asleep through this but it is hard to tell. It also tries to kill Tony and trap him in chains underneath the sea. Other key scenes are the plane crash where Iron Man is shown flying after people falling from the plane and him walking out of what people speculate to be a hospital surrounded by paparazzi, after maybe visiting Pepper? It is unclear at the moment but I’m sure it will make sense. The trailer begins with Tony lying battered in the snow and ends with him pulling what looks to be his suit behind him. A few new faces appear as well including The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), Guy Pearce and two oher women.
What’s interesting is the voice over by Downey Jr who begins with the opening line “I’ve got a lot of apologies to make”. To whom we might wonder and what exactly is it that he has to apologise for? Another line is “honestly, there’s 100 people who want to kill me”which doesn’t seem as scary because he is Iron Man so he can kill them in one punch. What’s scary is the faith he seems to have lost in himself as if he has given up. He says “I hope I can protect the one thing I can’t live without” and gestures to Pepper as we realise he has been speaking to her the whole time. It is heartbreaking yet heroic but as The Mandarin says in a voice over “Heros- there is no such thing” we know this is going to be a battle until the very end.
There are many questions posed by the trailer and it has fuelled a hype in fans everywhere as to what will happen to the invincible Tony Stark in this third instalment where everything you treasure most is taken away from you.
