Often frowned upon as a joke or something used on online dating sites, chat up lines have always been seen as a desperate and cringey way to get a girl to go out with you. I had a lot of fun writing this article and researching chat up lines was brilliant entertainment. I also got to try them out on my boyfriend and friends much to their amusement and had a few interesting ones fired back at me! So what do you really think of chat up lines and have they ever worked out for you? I talked to some friends to find out and looked at the cheesiest ones just for laughs really.
Some of the girls’ responses on what they’d do if someone used a line on them…
“It depends how original it is or not. It’s either quite clever and I will laugh with a flattered ‘thanks’ as a response because I’ll be a bit shy. Or I will just think it’s awful and repeated so much I will probably just awkwardly laugh and try to get the hell out of there! I find them cringey most of the time and often like a guy to be more subtle than chat up lines.”
“It would depend who was saying it but generally I think they are pretty cringey and only good if they are said in a jokey way, but if it was serious it’s a no go area for me.”
“It depends on what line is used but my reaction would be to laugh and think it’s really cheesy because most of them are.”
“I’d think they were cheesy and desperate if it was someone I didn’t know. If it was someone I was getting to know, being a bit flirty with and they said it then I’d probably take it more as a joke and let them off but otherwise it’s a massive turn off!”
“It depends I think. If it was used in a clearly sleazy, leering way by a stranger who had no intentions of getting to know you properly then no. Ew. If it was used in a cute funny way, it could be cute and a good conversion starter…”
So it looks like it depends on a lot of things for the girls but overall the consensus was that they are cheesy and make us feel a bit awkward.
Then I asked the boys whether they would use a chat up line and if they thought it would be effective…
“If I was to I would do it for a laugh to break any tension, and I suppose they could be if people have a sense of humour.”
“I don’t think anyone’s ever used a chat up line to any effect.”
“I have never used them. I think they’re cheesy and silly however my mate uses silly, funny ones on Tinder to ‘break the ice’ and it always seems to work!”
“I’ve used them but only ironically with female friends. I think they’re fine jokes but I would never open with them. Using those lines also helps at seeing what their sense of humour is like. If they just look offended then I know there’s no mutual sense of humour.”
“I’m far too shy when it comes to dating, I wait for them to approach me and do a bit of small talk. I dislike chat up lines. I find the idea tacky, lacking in romance and unfunny. I think if someone is trying to use a chat up line they tend to fall into 3 categories:
1) People who just want sex/one night stand
2) People who are useless at breaking the ice but genuinely want to know you
3) Very cocky people who assume you will melt into their arms no matter what they say
Maybe a few people just think they are funny….I suppose the hardest part is trying to work out what the person you are being chatted up by wants.”
Generally, the guys thought they were more acceptable and quite funny but would rather start conversations other ways.
Below are some chat up lines that I got my friends to come up with. Can you guess which are the guys and which are the girls?!
“I’ll be Burger King and you be McDonald’s. I’ll have it my way, and you’ll be lovin’ it.”
“Do you know what this shirt is made out of? … Boyfriend material!”
“My name is Neville and I want to put something long up your bottom!”
“If I re arranged the alphabet I’d put U and I together.”
Hard to tell isn’t it!
There was a lot of chat up lines on the internet as I thought there would be. Some were sweet, some were downright cringey but a lot of them just made me laugh. This one was by far the worst:
“I wanna live in your socks so I can be with you every step of the way”
Said no one EVER! I mean who would ever hit on someone by talking about socks?! Not to mention wanting to live in them. If you think about it literally it’s actually quite creepy. Imagine if your boyfriend wanted to live in your socks. Let’s just hope your feet are clean…
“Are you an orphanage? Cause I wanna give you kids”
Wow… I don’t even know what to say about this one but if someone said this to me I’d run. Fast. It’s just weird and way too forward. The orphanage bit is what makes it so cringey, it just sounds depressing.
“Do you live in a corn field? Cause I’m stalking you”
Scary and worth an eye roll.
“Kiss me if I’m wrong, but dinosaurs still exist, right?”
Oooh sneaky but no, you’ve failed. Way too forward and awkward. They might still exist as well. You never know. No kiss for you!
“Did you clean your pants with Windex? I can practically see myself in them.”
HA! No mate, no chance. Run for your life.
“Sorry, but you owe me a drink. [Why?] Because when I looked at you, I dropped mine”
First of all scan the floor for said dropped drink which is obviously not going to be there and laugh sympathetically. I’m not really sure how you could go from there. It’s not particularly sweet and a bit rude to ask someone you’ve just met to buy you a drink. How ya gonna get out of that one?
“You’re the only girl I love now… but in ten years, I’ll love another girl. She’ll call you ‘Mommy.”
NO SHE WON’T GO AWAY CREEP!
“Can I take your picture to prove to all my friends that angels do exist?”
The trick to this one is to agree and pull the weirdest face you possibly can that is not attractive in the slightest. Now who do you fancy?
“Me without you is like a nerd without braces, A shoe without laces, aSentenceWithoutSpaces”
HAHAHAHAHAHA this should totally be a song…
“My love for you is like diarrhea, I just can’t hold it in”
Never under any circumstance, however awkward the situation and laid back the girl, compare them to faeces. It’s not cool.
Some more sweet ones…
“Can I follow you home? Cause my parents always told me to follow my dreams”
Aww of course you can!!
“If I had a star for every time you brightened my day, I’d have a galaxy in my hand”
Sounds poetic, I approve.
“Hi, my friend thinks you’re kinda cute, but I don’t. I think you’re absolutely gorgeous.”
Oh hello, you can stay!
“Because of you, I laugh a little harder, cry a little less, and smile a lot more”
So, that’s my round up of chat up lines. Whether you use them or not I think it’s safe to say most of them are cringy and only really there to break the ice in a conversation. I know I personally wouldn’t want someone to use a chat up line on me. They’d get nowhere! Let’s just leave them to the Tinder world.
